sustainablog’s Pedal-a-Watt Powered Blogathon: March 26-27, 2010

Need a good reason to stay up all night on a Friday night (besides the usual ones)? Join us on March 26 and 27 for sustainablog’s Pedal-Powered Blogathon, a 24-hour green blogging frenzy!
What’s a blogathon?
Think of a telethon shifted to the blogging medium. I and others will be up for 24 hours straight posting at sustainablog.
How is this “pedal-powered?”
I’ll be blogging from the Milkweed Mercantile, an eco bed and breakfast located at the Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage in NE Missouri. They’re already powered completely by renewables, but since my partner, Brian Toomey (founder of SEO firm JB Web Analytics) was planning to buy a pedal powered generator for those times when the solar power isn’t coming through, we thought “Why not power my laptop completely with that generator?” So we will… and since the folks at Convergence Tech, Inc. gave us a sweet deal on a Pedal-a-Watt pedal power generator, we’ve now renamed the event to the “Pedal-a-Watt Powered Blogathon.”

Why are you doing this?
In part, because it’s fun, and a great way to get the whole sustainablog community together. But, we’ll also be raising funds for Dancing Rabbit, specifically for residential outreach and education infrastructure.
How can I participate in the blogathon?
- Comment on blog posts: …of course (and we’ll be holding a prize drawing for commenters… see the list of prizes below)
- Join in our Twitter chat: We’ll use the hashtag #susbppb for Blogathon-related tweets, and I’ll have a TweetChat for that hastag open the whole time…
- Contribute a post: If you’re a green blogger, we’d love to have you involved… I’ll be putting together more information on how you can participate.
- Pledge: We’ll be asking for per-post pledges. I’ll shoot for 48-50 posts during the blogathon… if it looks like we’ll have lots of guest posts, and are able to do more, I’ll make sure the word gets out. All money you donate will go to DR. Please make pledges in the comment space below.
- Promote it: Help us get the word out via you blog, Twitter, Facebook…
Who will be guest blogging during the blogathon?
- Raz Godelnik of EcoLibris
- Jeffrey Davis of The Fun Times Guide to Living Green
- Simran Sethi of Oprah.com, the University of Kansas School of Journalism (where she teaches a Media & the Environment course), and WellCommons.

We’re grateful to these folks for contributing; we’re also still looking for bloggers who’d like to “donate” a post to the blogathon. Please let me know if you’re interested.
What are the drawing prizes for commenters?
- A Cup Glove from Glue & Glitter
- Ten book stickers (which mean ten trees planted) from Eco-Libris
- A gift package from Guayaki Yerba Mate, which includes several different product samples, a wreath gourd gift pack, and t-shirts.
- Four Soapnut Starter Kits from LaundryTree.com
- We’ve also got a prize coming from The Green Loop…
- Three children’s books: Sun, The Rainy Day, and 1001 Bugs to Spot. This donation is provided by Alison Kerr and her website GreatFunBooks.com where you can read more about finding fun kids books. Find Alison’s writing about nature, gardening, and sustainability at her blog Loving Nature’s Garden.
- An MP3 copy of Snatum Kaur’s Liberation’s Door from Spirit Voyage.
We’re still looking for drawing prizes, so if you’re a retailer or manufacturer of a green product who’d like to help out, please get in touch.

Thanks so much, Mom & Dad! Knew I could count on you guys…
I pledge $20 total. The thought of DR out there keeps my spirit high…..
Blog ON!
Thank you so much, Alan! They’re inspiring folks up there doing amazing things… I’ve really enjoyed my visits, and am really looking forward to the blogathon.
I’m contributing a post, yes. But in solidarity for the pedalers, I’m also going to ride my bike across SF tomorrow. We’ll see how it goes. Have never done it before.
Hope I can generate some $$ for you.
Good luck!
I’m so glad you’re going to be a part of the event, Beth… pedal on! And be careful…
I pledge $50 total. I am impressed with what Dancing Rabbit has accomplished and would like to see them be able to spread their knowledge.
I’d love to ad a blog post – let me know how!
I spend time at Dancing Rabbit when they were just starting out. I would love to support them!
I pledge $5.00. I want to see Beth ride her bike.
oops! I should have said $5.00 total.
I pledge $50. Keep up the good work! I am like that monkey with his hand in the trap, relatively comfortable but not happy and wondering what could be. If /when I can see my way clear to take the hand out or if circumstances make it easier (i.e. job loss), I pledge to go live in a community like yours.
Morning Tea, Reading the Blogathon, what a nice day. Sorting through ideas on how I can best support DR this year. Send along more Tea for one…..
Alan
We love supporting you guys. You give selflessly to better our world. What could be better than that?
Keep growing and we are looking forward to seeing you all again soon.
Until then, here’s our pledge of $500.
Stan @ Jo Ann
I am not able to donate but I tweeted about your efforts @mostlyeven . Hope it was a success!
Here’s my post — so sad I learned about this a little too late to participate fully.
