Has anyone seen the identity theft commercial where a woman has her identity stolen by a "jogger" who stops to rummage through her blue recycling box? How much easier it must be to invade the blue box instead of having to deal with the filth that resides in the normal curbside container. Are shredders considered environmentally friendly when you compare their power consumption to the paper that gets recycled?

Don't worry, it's not just the US. I was shocked to recently learn that Calgary, a big, wealthy Canadian city, doesn't have a blue box program. It's dismaying when, out in BC, we've been gungho on recycling for a generation.

What a great post. I became a lifelong recycler after seeing trash all over Buenos Aires, even in an ecological reserve. I know that was a unique opportunity that not everyone can enjoy, but personal experiences are going to affect people's decisions so much more than information alone.

"Generally, it costs us to provide a recycling company with the materials they’ll sell. Is there any other industry that relies on such a model for materials basic to its existence? I realize the costs involved in recovering recyclables doesn’t create a high profit margin..."

Finally! Someone else understands that recycling (as it currently exists) is a flawed business model when measured against a profit-and-loss statement. Sure there may be some environmental benefits to recycling, but when it comes down to brass taxes it's a wasted effort. However, we all do things based upon irrational feelings without paying attention to their economic impact. If recycling makes you feel good, then go for it. If it doesn't work for someone like me, don't force the issue until you can prove its tangible worth. I don't have enough hours in the day to provide many more free services.

Great site. Great tips on being green. This is a great article for the times, and I hope that many people will follow your resolutions. I am a firm believer in REDUCE, as in reduce what you buy, what you use, and make do with what you already have! Thanks.

I think all garbage should be presorted for recyclables before going to the dump. As much as that sounds costly and time consuming think about how many people don't recycle. I don't know all the logistics, I just think if we made it a job instead of a preference we would be more efficient at it and would have much less waste going to the dumps. Why are we opting in or opting out of recycling, why don't we as a society demand that our garbage get pre-sorted before going to the dump? Money is the reason of course. We need to figure out a way to make pre sort more cost effective than direct dumping. How about a plan?
